Recycling. It is a worldwide known term since almost every company tries to help the environment. It might seem like a pretty modern concept that’s only a couple of years old. What would you say? 10 to 15 years? If we would be very precisely: it exists for already thousands of years. Back in the days, people weren’t able to make goods quickly and cheaply, so they were forced to practice recycling in some form. But when did the recycling we know nowadays start? It may surprise you that recycling already began in the 1930s when there was an environmental movement.
Recycling became these years very popular because of economic depressions: People couldn’t afford themselves to buy new goods, and it was necessary to recycle if they wanted to survive. To help support the war effort in 1940, commodities as nylon, rubber, and many metals were recycled. In 1970, the first ‘Earth Day’ was launched, and this brought recycling back to the attention. Between 1940 and 1970, recycling hadn’t had much attention due to public acceptance and the recycling-market that wasn’t growing. Since then, it has generally increased from year to year.
In a lot of countries, the laws were changed, and they forced companies to recycle. The biggest reason is, of course, saving the environment, but there are also some benefits in it for the company itself. One of the other benefits is that it saves money. With special recycling programs, it is possible to avoid costs and even better, save money for other sustainable initiatives. It also encourages and motivates the employees to come together and keep each other accountable. People like it to feel that they work for a company that is doing the right thing. If they think that their participation has a positive impact on the company, they are more likely to sit together and see how they can help.
At Canggu Bali Surf, we also try to be as sustainable as possible. When the surfing is done, customers can drink some water out of a glass bottle instead of plastic bottles. The glass bottles are reused. We also minimize the amount of plastic by using bags from IKEA to throw your towels instead of throwaway plastic bags. Moreover, we help the environment by cleaning the beach during events like ‘Bali Keep Clean’ and last but not least: we also try to use as less paper as needed. This means that when a customer wants a surf lesson he or she has to sign up. This is all done by using an iPad instead of giving the customer some paper forms to fill in. Wherever it’s possible, we try to use the digital world as much as possible.
As mentioned above, we also participated in some cleaning events. At this moment, we’re in the middle of the rainy season, and beyond the last showers we receive somedays, we also have to deal with a huge amount of waste on the beach. Some may call it the ‘plastic season.’ This waste is coming from the rivers. The waste in the rivers begins to move as soon as there is more water in the rivers than before because of the rain. The combination of wind and flow of the water brings all the waste into the sea and finally, this ends up at the beach. To make it possible to still go to the beach, we supported in 2006 the ‘Bali Keep Clean’ campaign, and in 2011 we supported the ‘Surfing and Cleaning Up Beach’ with Orphan Kids. We try to keep the beach as clean as possible to make it fun for everyone to go to the beach. Don’t worry; we already cleaned the beach for you, so don’t wait, and come to Canggu Bali Surf to surf and enjoy the clean beach!
